10.07.08 Up to 9 million motorists will be worse
off when the Government introduces its new road tax
regime in 2010.
Rather than penalise the gas guzzlers which was the
initial intention, it would seem that the changes will
have a far wider effect than was anticipated.
Around one third of motorists will be better off but
this will hardly please the majority of voters most of
whom will still be bristling following the attempt to
remove the 10p lower rate tax band. The road tax
initiative is being seen as yet another badly managed,
badly thought out tax proposal from Gordon Browns
Government.
The details of the tax have only emerged because of a
Parliamentary question raised by an MP Lobbyist for
environmental groups are very happy with the proposals
and have urged people to use
bus travel or
public transport as an alternative.
The AA however commented that "This is not a green
tax but a mean tax that will hit millions of hard-up
families" It is quite hard not to agree with that
assumption at a time when motorists are being slammed at
the petrol pumps and having to deal with a severe
economic downturn.
