28.08.08 New laws being introduced this year will
mean harsher sentencing for drivers caught using mobile
phones or eating whilst driving a motor vehicle. In
particular, drivers who are involved in serious
accidents whilst not paying attention or driving with
due care, may receive prison sentences. This new
legislation has been brought in to ensure that those
road users who are irresponsible enough to be driving
and at the same time using their mobile phone, are dealt
with severely.
There have been many serious accidents in the last 15
years caused by drivers being distracted by mobile
phones. The law has evolved to deal with the issue but
critics claim that not enough is being done to get the
message across to the public that mobiles and vehicles
dont mix. These new laws will see drivers being jailed
for failing to heed the warnings although this will only
be the case for repeat offenders or those causing death
or serious injury on the road.
