Maternity wards face criticism over poor standards of care

Need for improvement in maternity care across England & Wales

10/07/2008

The BBC today reported that a recent survey has highlighted the problems faced by maternity units up and down the country. There is a disparity in the level of services and the choice available from one health authority to another.

With low morale and limited investment there are fears about increasing number of hospital mistakes or negligence which according to our own statistics seem to be on an upward cycle. Maternity issues account for around 40% of all cases that we deal with here at The Claims connection.

More here on the actual article from the BBC:

Some NHS trusts in England need to do more to make maternity services safer and improve choices for mothers, the Healthcare Commission has said.

A survey of 150 trusts by the watchdog found low staffing levels and poor facilities in some hospitals.

Midwives said ministers would struggle to meet a promise to allow every mother to choose where she gave birth by 2009. The government said it was providing £330m, recruiting 4,000 midwives by 2012 and was "listening" to mothers.

The report was commissioned after a series of separate Healthcare Commission investigations into deaths at maternity hospitals revealed similar problems.
