Mistakes  made in identifying scepticaemia led to baby's death

14/11/2008

A baby died 24 hours after being released from hospital following an examination for what was believed to be a simple viral infection.

In fact Aleesha Evans's who was only 9 month old at the time, was suffering from meningococcal septicaemia and was gravely ill.

An inquest heard that Aleesha's mother Shiree Hanbury and father Craig Evans said they were told by the Royal Gwent Hospital that Aleesha had a viral infection. Ms Hanbury told the inquest: "My daughter was happy and always smiling and was in generally good health. "When we got to the hospital Craig kept saying 'Is it meningitis?' They said no. "They told us to keep an eye on her and give her Calpol and Nurofen." She wept in the witness box as she went on to describe what happened at home the next morning.

Dr Michael Kelsey, a consultant microbiologist, said the post mortem examination report into the death of the baby indicated she did not have meningitis.

He said she appeared to have died from multiple organ failure as a result of meningococcal septicaemia.

Meningitis and associated conditions can be notoriously difficult to identify. However, there are simple tests which should be adopted to ensure that the best possible diagnosis should be made. A claim for medical negligence may arise where health authority staff are found to be lacking in basic application of these crucial tests.

The inquest continues
